UPDATED, 9/10: The University of California Regents meet in San Francisco September 17 and 18, and they are likely to consider a weak sustainability resolution, rather than the original proposed resolution to divest the university's endowment from fossil fuel companies.
Unfortunately, we have learned that the Regents Divestment Task Force is recommending this watered-down resolution despite the original mandate of the Task Force. This decision was reached without student or alumni input and was done in a closed-door setting. The recommendation now is for no more than a loose ESG (environmental, social, and governance) framework, but not for divestment.
We need strong public pushback to get the Regents to vote YES on divestment. Here's what you can do:
- Call the UC Investment Office to voice your dissatisfaction at 510-987-0200 and ask for CIO Jagdeep Bachher.
- Tweet @UofCalifornia and use #UCRegents to express your disappointment on social media.
- RSVP for the September 17 Regents Meeting on this page, and also reply on Facebook to show Fossil Free UC that we will be there to support the campaign.
- Reach out to friends and get them to do the same.
We need supporters to fill the observer area at the meeting. Let's show the Regents that we want bold leadership from them: stop funding the companies that are crippling the planet.
Fossil Free UC has done all the ground work to bring a divestment resolution to the Regents. We will be rallying with them at 7:30 am to prepare for the meeting. A brief public-comment period begins at 8:30 am, and the report of the Committee on Investments is scheduled for 1:00 pm that day.
