UPDATE: Presentation on UC Berkeley's Climate Readiness Institute
NEW: Come hear what UC Berkeley's new Climate Readiness Institute is doing. Is the main focus adaptation? What's the strategy to reduce emissions? Is the Institute engaged in advocating for UC Divestment? How does it coordinate with other climate focused work at UCB?
NEW: Will the Air District divest from fossil fuels?
ONGOING: In July Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) staff presented a Program update to the BAAQMD Climate Protection Committee.
We want the Air District to develop a Regional Climate Action Plan at least equal to its 2005 Ozone Strategy and to its 2012 report "Understanding Particulate Matter: Protecting Public Health in the San Francisco Bay Area."
In fact, achieving the GHG emission reduction goal is a primary path to reducing particulate matter emissions (responsible for about 1,700 premature deaths per year in the Bay Area) since they are both largely caused by combustion.
The "Regional Climate Action Strategy" laid out in the Climate Work Program appears to fall short of a true commitment to develop a plan to achieve all the emission reductions.
Show up September 29 at Climate Protection Committee meeting to press for faster, stronger action on GHGs in concert with action on particulate matter, for the sake of protecting both the climate and public health.
