From December 1st to 12th, it's time to let the global climate policy makers who will be meeting in Lima, Peru, know that we demand a safe future for ourselves and those yet to come.
From event flyer (download):
• We want a world-wide reduction in carbon emissions.
• We want to stop the carbon-trading scheme known as REDD+.
• We want to hold fossil fuel corporations financially & legally accountable for their harms, and to fund the account for Climate Destruction and Refugees.
From the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change website: The 20th session of the Conference of the Parties and the 10th session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol will be held from 1 to 12 December. COP 20/CMP 10 will be hosted by the Government of Peru, in Lima, Peru.
We must make sure the policy makers understand that we know they are meeting to determine whether or not climate chaos will continue unabated. Click here to visit the Facebook event page for more description and details.
Peru itself has been a focus of violent confrontations between indigenous people and their environmental allies, and corrupt local governments ready to violate human rights to reap enormous profits. From the a New York Times blog:
"Global Witness research (…) shows that on average, two such ‘environmental and land’ defenders are being killed each week around the world, a rate that has been increasing in recent years. (…) As global demand for natural resources intensifies, more and more ordinary people are having to defend their rights to land and the environment from corporate or state abuse."
